Wharton's Arrival

The Wild Man The Ambush Wharton pretends to be drugged, then attacks Dean Stanton with his wrist chain. He is subdued by Brutal. A Psychopath's Nature Wharton is cunning, violent, and proud. He calls himself Billy the Kid. He delights in causing chaos. First Impressions Paul sees the face of an animal. Wharton is unlike any prisoner they have handled.

Wharton's Reign of Terror

Constant Provocation The Moon Pie Incident Wharton spits chocolate sludge in Brutal's face. He is straitjacketed and locked in the restraint room. The Urination Wharton pisses on Harry Terwilliger. He is again subdued with a fire hose. The Song Wharton sings "The Barbecue Song" after Delacroix's execution, mocking the dead. He is remorseless.

Wharton's Death

The Executioner's Bullet The Shooting Percy, now catatonic from Coffey's transfer, walks to Wharton's cell and shoots him six times. Wharton dies instantly. The Aftermath Wharton's body is removed. The guards cover up the incident. Wharton's death is a relief, but it is also a murder. The Truth Revealed Paul later discovers that Wharton was the real killer of the Detterick twins. His death prevents justice from being served.
